HAPE will assess the
student’s ability to use diagnostic reasoning in gathering
client-related data in an organized, systematic way so as to
identify actual or potential health problems and to assist
the client in maintaining an optimum level of wellness. The
HAPE incorporates both nursing theory and knowledge of the
health assessment process and tests its implementation at
the beginning professional level of competence.
Excelsior College (formerly Regents College) will
provide enrolled students with an HAPE study guide and a
videotape with a workbook to assist with the
examination.
Take a health
history Perform a physical examination Synthesize the
data collected to develop a nursing care plan Must
identify normal and abnormal heart and breath sounds Must
demonstrate competence in both theory and practice
Must be in
enrolled in Excelsior College. Request the application
for the HAPE from Excelsior College, complete it and turn it
in. Due to the large number of students in the program,
the waiting period for clinicals will fluctuate.
